The flight duty times regulations in Europe have been a source of great controversy for years, because they lack a sound, scientific basis. Today’s pilots already fly longer than is acceptable. Give us a feedback. What do you think?

Thanks for you comments. Maximum work hours is the goal, not safety from what you are saying. What do passengers face if they allow airlines to push pilots and flight attendants even harder?

Even the best mathematicians would be hard pressed to argue with your assesment SFO. Thanks for you comments.Ed.
14. May 2012 at 20:46
Thanks for your comments Kjetil. We certainly agree that an airline trying to do more than just satisfy regulations will face economic penalties.

As a passenger with an enthusiasm for airplanes and one that knows quite a lot about safety, I think fatigue is the most scary thing today. It is impressive how the airline industry has had an ability to learn from accidents to make flying as safe as it is today, but fatigue is the final issue that really needs to come into consideration in a scientifically sound way. As a passenger, we cannot make a decision on which carrier to fly, because we cannot know how well they deal with fatigue, we cannot know how their pilots feel about saying they are unfit for flying. Moreover, competition creates a race-to-the-bottom, so those that are more careful will have an economic penalty, something that is impossible to bear in todays world. Therefore, baseline rules must be scientifically sound and apply to the whole industry. Flying is really cheap, we can certainly pay the extra cost!

Sounds horrible! But I’m pretty sure that sooner or later and specially if the new EASA rules come into power, we will see a new market segment in the European competition: the high risk carriers with even lower fares… Have in mind that some government officials are trying to push for a minimum rest of only 7.5 hrs between duty! If you make the math on how much time you have to spend to get out of the cockpit after being on blocks and out of the airport to your crew rest facility (don’t even dare to call it hotel any more) and then back you will end up with – hopefully some 4 hrs of sleep… This is neither safe nor human. I would call it a modern form of slavery. cheers…

Its just totally crazy how much pilots are able to work legally. One week ago had 6 days in row total duty time was 55 hours in 6 days. I had 2 early mornings starting at 0530 local check in time,in 5 days out off 6 six had 4 flights per day (4 sectors) and also one short night stop were 3 sectors were before the break, trying to sleeping in the aircraft seat for 3 hours!!! and you can guess how good is the sleep when sleeping in the hard aircrafts seat, so on that night slept max 10 mins so was awake almost 21 hours in row that day/night…. and then the day after had early morning flights with 4 sectors, so basically hole body rhytm is messed up with that kind of roster and you really feel tired after the 6th day… and its all totally legal by the EU ops. After that kind of week they only have to give me 36 hours rest with 2 local nights
22:00-08:00 min total rest 8 hours and then i am legal again to work 6 days in row, so basically in 2 weeks time I could work 110 duty hours, so you can just guess how tired the pilots can be…
and if you give this kind of crazy duty limits you can be sure tha the low cost operators will work their pilots to max amount with just min 36 hours rest weekly!!! total madness i say!

Great list I particularly agree with the nbmeur one. Uninformed friends often ask me how safe it is to fly regional airlines or low cost airlines here in Europe. My answer is always the same: airlines are airlines and the rules are the same for all, whatever the kind of business model they follow. Moreover, low cost airlines simply can’t avoid loosing an aircraft. The media are so suspicious towards them that any accident would probably be fatal for the company itself.
24. February 2012 at 18:22
It is amazing, fuel prices cause a huge following in Facebook but Aviation Safety generates only a limited interest. I know fuel prices hit us every day but pilot fatigue can hit us even worse.
24. February 2012 at 17:17
Accidents were fatigue is a contributory factor are much more that what it seems, however no company or investigator will ever admit that pilots flight time limits are inappropiate unless it is absolutely evident. People just want to pay less, Airlines just wants more margin, pilots just have to fly like crazy, and what is ridiculous is that while we are begging for a break we all have thousands of fellow pilots unemployed!
18. February 2012 at 10:49
Hello to all, the contents present at this site are actually amazing for people knowledge, well, keep up the good work fellows.

Politics, leave your desks and join us in cockpit. Best way to understand what we are talking about. FADIGUE is proven to kill when someone a driving a machine: in aviation, we do not kill one or dozen, we may kill hundreds. So, be carefull what you sign.

I was flying from 8 pm to 730 am, eating breakfast, sleeping from 9 am till 5 pm, eating dinner and starting over again, for 5 nights in a row. Then a 2 day weekend and doing the same crap on Monday morning, starting with a positioning flight at 7 am. Did this for weeks in a row and all perfectly legal. By the third week I started making really stupid mistakes, like reading wrong flap speeds and forgetting stuff in general. These new rules are even worse! There is only one outcome of this, if this goes through; disaster. Mark my words. When there is going to be an emergency people are going to be too tired to react in the appropriate manner. Just look at the Colgan Air crash. This will happen in Europe as well when this goes through.
26. January 2012 at 11:38
Guys, we need help in Asia as well……..where the situation is even worse……
It’s just matter of time before something serious is going to happen…..!!
Gruelling rounds with minimum rest and almost maximum duty……Flying every day for 7 days in a raw in these conditions……
We seriously need help…!!!

I was victim of flight incident due to crew fatigue .
After a first early duty with catIII landing, the cockpit crew was requested to continue the duty for one other flight to LHR.
Upon stabilising N1 before take off a sound in the cockpit… Advised us that the flaps where not selected.
Of course this kind of incident ( according SOP) ad not to be reported.
Nevertheless I had to follow a revaluation.
This procedure was humiliating.
And finally quit the company
23. January 2012 at 13:15
Dear John.
This page is about fatigue, not TCP’s. I believe you are doing a good job on your own webpage in regards to the toxins. But please understand that here we are talking purely about fatigue in relation to the new flight duty times regulations proposed by EASA.

Few aircrew are aware that significant chronic fatigue is caused by toxic chemicals in the cabin air – known as Aerotoxic Syndrome since 1999 or the ‘Best kept Secret in Aviation’ and is backed up by international scientific studies.
The only method of detecting toxic fumes is the pilot’s nose – hardly an intelligent way of operating expensive aircaft in the 21st century.
Whilst few aircrew or passeengrs are aware of this danger as it is invisible and not openly discussed despite many aircrew losing their good health prematurely.
There is no doubt that fatigue can be caused by toxic poisoning as well as long hours – please consider both, if fatigue is to be beaten.
